Summary

Dr. Abata has worked in academia at several universities around the country and with the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C.  Throughout his career he has been honored with numerous distinguished teaching and research awards.  His areas of research include fundamental and experimental studies in combustion, fuels, internal combustion engines, and emissions.  At the University of Wisconsin-Madison he studied under the tutelage of Professor Phil Myers and Professor Otto Uyehara and has continued to work with the automobile and engine manufacturing industries for his entire career.  He has held numerous appointments at the University of Wisconsin, at Michigan Technological University (Associate Dean and Dean of Engineering) at Northern Arizona University (Dean of Engineering and Technology) at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSMT).  From 2003 to 2004, Dr. Abata was President of the American Society for Engineering Education. Dr. Abata joined the faculty at SDSMT in July of 2006 as the founding Dean of the College of Engineering.  From 2008 to 2013 he was the Executive Director of the Center for Bioenergy Research and Development (CBERD), a National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center with cooperating sites at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (lead institution), North Carolina State University, Kansas State University, State University of New York - Stony Brook, South Dakota State University, and the University of Hawaii - Manoa.  Dr. Abata is currently a tenured full professor in the thermosciences (energy and power) division of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology located near the Black Hills of South Dakota in Rapid City, South Dakota.  He continues his research work with engines, combustion, and emissions.

In addition to his teaching and research work in mechanical engineering Dr. Abata serves as International Coordinator for European Project Semester, EPS.  EPS is a semester long engineering design experience for students interested in obtaining their design experience in Europe in an international setting.  Dr. Abata has participated as a visiting scholar in environmental subjects for EPS  in Copenhagen, Denmark and Oslo, Norway.  Dr. Abata is a member of the EPS Providers Group.
